Metabolic profiling and training prescription

In competitive swimming, there is a high demand for meaningful diagnostic procedures and valid athlete profiles derived from them in order to tailor training programs to individual prerequisites. Metabolic performance diagnostics provide a central foundation for this process: they enable physiologically based athlete profiling and more precise training prescription based on individual intensity domains and appropriate monitoring parameters.

At the Department of Exercise Physiology at the German Sport University Cologne, several consecutive research projects have developed, validated and examined the reliability of new diagnostic approaches for the German Swimming Federation. One example is the 3-minute incremental step test with small velocity increments, which allows for a differentiated assessment of swimming-specific metabolic performance characteristics.

This presentation provides an overview of these developments and uses concrete examples to demonstrate how performance-physiological parameters can be used for athlete profiling and translated into direct recommendations for training practice.

Modern performance analysis has expanded far beyond race times, providing coaches with biomechanical and physiological information that supports evidence-based decision making. This presentation will illustrate how complementary approaches—including race analysis, load–velocity profiling, and heart-rate monitoring—can be used to assess performance, guide training prescription, and support individualized coaching. Practical examples will demonstrate how integrating these methods can help bridge the gap between research and coaching practice in competitive swimming.

Training methodology in middle-distance, long-distance and open-water swimming – commonalities, differences and practical consequences for training planning

Designing training methodology in middle-distance, long-distance and open-water swimming challenges coaches to reconcile discipline-specific demands with individual development pathways and long-term performance goals. The talk provides a practice-oriented overview of planning and structuring training in these disciplines and examines both shared foundations and specific differences.

The focus lies on periodised training planning, the design of microcycles and the methodical structure of individual training sessions and sets. Characteristic demands of middle distance, long distance and open-water swimming are contrasted and discussed with regard to their consequences for training control.

A further emphasis lies on a differentiated view of individual influencing factors. These include sex-specific aspects of training planning as well as adaptations depending on training age and long-term performance development. Practical approaches are shown for how training content can be purposefully adapted to different development and performance levels.

Monitoring and the use of technologies to support recovery and to assess performance in swimming

Over the past ten years, working with the French national pool and open-water swimming teams, Robin Pla has integrated a range of monitoring technologies into daily training to better understand and support athlete readiness. This presentation shares the practical lessons learned from this applied experience, focusing on tools that help coaches assess an athlete's current wellness state and guide day-to-day decisions. Key metrics include heart rate variability (HRV) as an indicator of autonomic recovery, hydration testing, objective and subjective training load, heart rate responses, and core body temperature, etc. Together, these measures allow to build an individualized picture of how each swimmer is adapting to and recovering from training. The presentation will illustrate how this information can be used to fine-tune training load, individualize recovery strategies, and reduce the risk of maladaptation or overreaching. The final goal is to give coaches actionable insight that complements their expertise.
